The Lifestyle of Nikola Tesla

Nikola Tesla was a very tall and skinny man, standing over six feet and weighing around one hundred and forty pounds. He had light blue-gray eyes, which was considered odd because he was of Serbian descent who were typically known to have darker eyes. Tesla, probably joking, said to a reporter that his eyes used to be dark, but using his mind so much had made them many shades lighter. The inventor was known to be very elegant, stylish, meticulous in his grooming, clothing, and regimented in his daily activities.
Tesla never married and remained a celibate and a bachelor his entire life. Tesla was solely committed to the principles of science above all else, and for this reason, he denied the love and companionship of a female counterpart. He chose to lead a solitary life, hoping only that this sacrifice to work would make his name live on through many centuries still to come.
One of his few hobbies other than work was feeding birds. Tesla’s respect for birds began when he was a child growing up in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He and his local friends made a sport out of catching live birds, and when Tesla himself caught a couple of keepers, he and his friend found themselves getting attacked by a murder of crows. The revolt forced the boys to release the birds and take cover. In America, he made it a specialty of his to treat sick pigeons, which seems odd because he was quite the germaphobe. He would feed them every day on his daily walks and would also take in wounded pigeons and nurse them back to health at his hotel in New York. He seemed to have had a better connection with birds than with most people. In 1917, he was awarded the Edison Medal, and upon receiving the award, the inventor could not be found. He was later found feeding pigeons near a local library and was persuaded back to the ceremony to give his speech.
Tesla suffered from an obsessive compulsive disorder, and because of this, he developed some very strange idiosyncrasies and phobias, such as having a strong dislike against earrings, pearls, peaches, and touching other people's hair. He counted the steps in his walks and calculated the cubical contents of soup plates, coffee cups, and pieces of food. All repeated acts or operations he performed had to be divisible by three.
While living in New York, Tesla kept his laboratories absolutely clean and pure, refused to touch other people, would wear gloves while shaking hands, and insisted upon personally cleaning his own plates and silverware at restaurants with his requested 18 napkins. This cleanliness was all intentional because, as a child, he almost died from cholera, which raged in the region of his hometown Lika due to contaminated water. Many found Tesla’s actions strange, but to him, it was a very important measure to protect his health.
In another way to keep his body clean and pure, Tesla invented an electrical apparatus that could give the human body a dry bath by passing millions of volts of electricity through it (similar to his demonstrations in the early 1890s where he passed electricity through his own body). His oscillator was a small, drum-like object about two feet long by one foot wide and could apply half a million volts of electricity through his body. The large amount of electricity would affect the germs without destroying the cells of the tissues of the body. Though his oscillator seemed like a fountain of youth, Tesla maintained his conventional ideas of health. He bathed daily, believed in plenty of exercise, and would walk eight or ten miles every day. He said that he never would take a cab or other conveyance and relied on his leg power for transportation.
His diet was a crucial part of his daily routine to remain healthy and to prolong the length of his life. He was very fussy and particular about his food: he ate very little, but what he did eat had to be the very best. He wasn’t a complete vegetarian; he ate meat, just not very occasionally (perhaps once or twice a year). He did believe though that humankind should move towards a vegetarian diet, not just because eating meat the way we do is “barbarous,” as he said, but because he believed the vegetarian diet is more beneficial to the human body.
In his later years, he never smoked, drank tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages, or consumed any other stimulant. Since he saw life through the lens of his mechanistic theory of life, he took great care of his body as if it were a machine properly maintaining its best efficiency.
As for sleep, Tesla reported that he was a poor sleeper and had very unusual resting patterns. He claimed to only sleep a few hours each day and would oftentimes practice polyphasic sleep where he would take short naps for restoration instead of sleeping for a long period of time.
Unfortunately for Tesla and his clean and healthy lifestyle, in 1937, at the age of 81, he was hit by a taxicab during one of his regular walks. It is likely he was jaywalking because he admittedly was known to do so. He broke three ribs and seriously injured his back. Tesla would be bedridden for months while refusing to see a doctor, and on top of this would catch pneumonia, which would plague his health for the last 5 years of his life. I believe this accident and sickness would play a major role in the rapid decline of his health, both mentally and physically, and his goal of living past a century would never be realized.
Nikola Tesla had a unique and eccentric lifestyle and was known for his intense work habits, often spending long hours in his laboratory. So much so that his friends would seriously worry about his health. Financial difficulties were a recurring theme in his life, and he died in relative obscurity. Despite these challenges, Tesla's legacy is marked by his groundbreaking contributions to the field of electrical engineering.

Respected and rather well liked among the other Olympians (except Meryl)
After the death of his sister at the hands of mortal Soldiers during the Trojan war and Vash losing his left arm to the same soldiers, he became fiercely protective/possessive of his twin brother
Some time after the end of the Trojan War he built a giant "cage” under Mt. Olympus and locked Vash inside it for nearly a Millennium.
When any of the other Olympians asked him regarding Vash’s whereabouts he’d tell them his brother was travelling through the mortal realm, which seemed to shut the majority of the other gods up regarding this issue and the Golden Cage beneath their feet remained a secret only he and Vash knew about.
After Vash managed to escape the the golden Cage with the help of Meryl and Roberto, rather than an eternal Winter like Demeter in the Myth of Persephone & Hades, Nai, overcome with rage, created a giant war that would slowly spread across all of ancient Greece.

Nai’s Design as you may have gathered is very much based on your typical Greek Hoplite Soldier
He was supposed to also wear a helmet but i was so proud of how the hair had turned out that I did not want to cover it up haha.
Around the time that this story takes place in, classical greece, bronze armours like these had actually fallen out of fashion in favour of iron ones so I just like to think that Nai, being over 1000 years old, is just very traditional or never fully mentally moved on from the Trojan War so he kept his old Bronze Plate Armour all those years while still adopting the newer Hoplite Warfare system (which used spears and Phalanx formations in comparison to the open battle fields and sword fights of the Mycenean Age/the Trojan War)
As for Nai‘s spear, an actual Dory could be up to 4 meters high, especially in the case of Macedonian ones. But making him run around with one of those would be impractical for many reasons as you may assume. The half-moon shaped spikes right underneath the actual Spear‘s spike is the part I stole from ancient greek hunting spears. The point of them was to keep wild animals like boars at a safe distance from you. Because boars, even if you pierce their skull with the actual spear‘s tip would just keep on running towards you even if it meant impaling their own brain on the entire spear Dracula Style. If you look closely you can kind of see it on the Meleager Sarcophagus.

The findings are the latest in a string of web bugs that have impacted dozen of carmakers. New Digital Identity Guidelines Strike Back at Dreadful Password Policies
A new draft of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's “Digital Identity Guidelines” finally takes steps to eliminate reviled password management practices that have been shown to do more harm than good. The recommendations, which will be mandatory for US federal government entities and serve as guidelines for everyone else, ban the practice of requiring users to periodically change their account passwords, often every 90 days.
The policy of regularly changing passwords evolved out of a desire to ensure that people weren't choosing easily guessable or reused passwords; but in practice, it causes people to choose simple or formulaic passwords so they will be easier to keep track of. The new recommendations also ban “composition rules,” like requiring a certain number or mix of capital letters, numbers, and punctuation marks in each password. NIST writes in the draft that the goal of the Digital Identity Guidelines is to provide “foundational risk management processes and requirements that enable the implementation of secure, private, equitable, and accessible identity systems.”
DOJ Indicts Alleged Iranian Hackers Over Trump Campaign Breach
The US Department of Justice unsealed charges on Friday against three Iranian men who allegedly compromised Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and leaked stolen data to media outlets. Microsoft and Google warned last month that an Iranian state-sponsored hacking group known as APT42 had targeted both the Joe Biden and Donald Trump presidential campaigns, and successfully breached the Trump campaign. The DOJ claims the hackers compromised a dozen people as part of its operation, including a journalist, a human rights advocate, and several former US officials. More broadly, the US government has said in recent weeks that Iran is attempting to interfere in the 2024 election.
“The defendants’ own words made clear that they were attempting to undermine former President Trump’s campaign in advance of the 2024 U.S. presidential election,” Attorney General Merrick Garland said at a press conference on Friday. "We know that Iran is continuing with its brazen efforts to stoke discord, erode confidence in the US electoral process, and advance its malign activities.”
Irish Regulator Fines Meta More Than $100 Million Over 2019 Password Lapse
The Irish Data Protection Commission fined Meta €91 million, or roughly $101 million, on Friday for a password storage lapse in 2019 that violated the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation. Following a report by Krebs on Security, the company acknowledged in March 2019 that a bug in its password management systems had caused hundreds of millions of Facebook, Facebook Lite, and Instagram passwords to be stored without protection in plaintext in an internal platform. Ireland's privacy watchdog launched its investigation into the incident in April 2019.
“It is widely accepted that user passwords should not be stored in plaintext, considering the risks of abuse that arise from persons accessing such data," Irish DPC deputy commissioner Graham Doyle said in a statement. “It must be borne in mind that the passwords, the subject of consideration in this case, are particularly sensitive, as they would enable access to users’ social media accounts.”
The Tor Project and the Tails Privacy Operating System Are Merging
The digital anonymity nonprofit the Tor Project is merging with privacy- and anonymity-focused Linux-based operating system Tails. Pavel Zoneff, the Tor Project’s communications director, wrote in a blog post on Thursday that the move will facilitate collaboration and reduce costs, while expanding both groups' reach. “Tor and Tails provide essential tools to help people around the world stay safe online,” he wrote. “By joining forces, these two privacy advocates will pool their resources to focus on what matters most: ensuring that activists, journalists, other at-risk and everyday users will have access to improved digital security tools.”

he US presidential election has not been the only high-stakes date looming for Elon Musk. It has been more than a year since Swedish workers came out on strike against his electric car giant Tesla. Swedish industrial union IF Metall has been demanding better wages, benefits and conditions for mechanics in Tesla repair shops across the country, but fundamentally what is at stake is the Swedish labour market model of collective bargaining which Musk refuses to recognise. It is the first and only strike against Tesla anywhere in the world. And it has now become the longest-running strike in Sweden for a century. In April, six months into the dispute, Musk said: “Actually, I think the storm has passed on that front, I think things are in reasonably good shape in Sweden.” That was not true then, and it is not true now. The past year has been marked by a wave of solidarity strikes by other unions to block the shipping of Tesla cars to Swedish ports, halt the cleaning of Tesla facilities, withhold postal deliveries, including new number plates, to all Tesla offices and prevent Tesla charging stations being connected to the power grid. Tesla has repeatedly lost legal battles against these solidarity strikes, and was recently forced to pay SEK6.5m (£468,000) in legal costs to the Swedish postal service, PostNord. Twelve Swedish trade unions are involved and three Nordic ones, including Norway’s transport union Fellesforbundet and 3F Transport in Denmark. Meanwhile, Tesla has brought in strikebreakers from the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Denmark and many other European countries to cover the 52 striking workers, almost half of Tesla’s mechanics in the country.

"are you sure you'll be fine?" he asked in the doorway of our bathroom "Yeah peach it's just a little cold promise" I said from our bed. i had been throwing up the past to mornings and a headache "i'll come back early today" "don't worry" he kissed my head "love you bye" "Love you" he walked out closing the door. I did not have a cold at all nor was I sick my period was late and Sean's Sean so me being pregnant was not unlikely. So I put some sweats on and grabbed my keys, I drove to the closed CVS and grabbed a test before going to the check out.
"Babe?" Sean said as I opened my car door "Sean what are you doing here?" I threw the bag into the car "getting me and the guys more Monsters I thought you were sick" he smiled "I am I came to get some sprite and bananas" I sighed and slightly smiled "okay," he said unsure "well i'll see you at home" he kissed my head "yeah!" I nodded.
It sat on the bathroom sink, me on the toilet cover. I was nervous you know Sean hasn't really said for sure that he wanted kids he had made comments how it would be nice but he didn't know how good of a dad he would be or if kids is really something he wants and he just feels he has too.
I sighed and and flipped the test 'Positive' I smiled "oh my god" my eyes started to water I slightly squealed. At this point I don't even really care what Sean has to say i'm super happy!.
I heard the front door open a few hours later, I put the test in my pocket and pretty much ran down the stairs. "sprite can do a lot I guess" he said putting his gym bag down "yeah," I smiled widely "come sit with me" I grabbed his hand and pulled him to the couch. "whats up?" he put his arm on the back of the couch "I have to tell you something! but don't be nervous okay?" "okay?" his brows going together "I don't have a cold the reason I was at CVS because i'm pregnant" I smiled "what?" "I got test this morning and its positive" "really?" I sighed and nodded he took a deep breath and put his head in his hands "sean your making me a little nervous" I whispered.
He looked up his eyes slightly watered "baby i'm so excited" he smiled I smiled back and wrapped my arms around him, he did the same "we have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning" I said kissed his cheek.

I asked she nodded "sometimes it people don't know till they have a baby" I looked to Sean he pushed his brows together same as me "when can we know the gender?" he asked "well if you do a blood test you can find out in 9-10 weeks but it won't be for sure, or wait till 18-24 weeks" "how long is that?" Sean asked "like 4-6 months" I replied he groaned "thats a long time" I nodded.
We were driving back home in Seans Tesla which he was driving the speed limit which I don't think hes ever done before "when can I tell people?" he asked "after the first trimester which is three months" "why?" he held my hand "just to make sure gos right" he nodded and slightly bit his lip "i'll be okay promise Peach" I smiled and rubbed his cheek "k" he smiled.

"Babe where are you?" he said coming back from the gym "kitchen!" he came in "why are you up?" I giggled "i'm hungry and your hungry soo" "no go sit down i'll finish" "no it's fine" "go sit" "okay Peach" I softly grabbed his chin and pecked his lips.

I heard her turn her show on and get cozy on the couch. I finished up dinner and made her a plate and got her a drink, I walked around the couch "her-" she was dead asleep shes been falling asleep everywhere and anytime. She softly snored and brought the throw pillow closer to her, she sighed and slightly opened her eyes "is the food ready?" she whispered "yeah" I chuckled as she sat up and I handed her the bowl.

"oh" the nurse said "what?" I asked Y/n looked up at me "nothing" the nurse added "you can't do that. is everything okay?" Y/n asked "i can't say but everything is fine health wise" Y/n looked unsure up at me as the woman moved the thing around on her stomach. The doctor finally came in "okay so I have some news for you guys!" she smiled "yes?!" Y/n said "you guys are pregnant with..Twins!" Y/ns mouth opened and laughed "I am?!" "she is?!" she nodded "they are both very healthy! there is baby 1 and right next to that is baby 2" she pointed on the screen, I looked down to Y/n with a wide smile on her face.
We walked out she was holding my hand and started slightly jumping up and down "i'm excited and Nervous!! oh my god are you excited?!" she looked up at me "i'm excited!" i smiled she smiled wider "I can't wait!" she grabbed the back of my neck pulling me down and kissing me.

--Y/ns POV --
We invited all our close family to the house and we made dinner, no friends I was kinda tell mine at brunch in a few day and me and Sean are going to the gym together and tell the guys tomorrow. We were sitting at the table "here guys me and sean got you guys something" I smiled handing mine and his mom a envelope, they both opened them "oh my god really?!" my mom asked I nodded she hugged me "look it's twins!" dawn (seans mom) said she handed the ultrasound to Seans brother and SIL, she hugged me too "careful mom" Sean said as his brother gave him a shoulder pat. "I can bring you all the boys stuff like they're cribs and stuff" my sister said "i'll let you" she walked away "i'm not putting my kids in her hippy cribs" Sean whispered to me I looked up and smiled patting his chest "I know" he scoffed a laugh.
They had all left, Sean walked his brother out while I was cleaning up the plates and all the trash. "what are you doing?" he asked "cleaning up?" I shrugged "go sit down i'll clean up" "no its fine you did a lot of the cooking" I kept grabbing the plate "your also 3 months pregnant with twins so go sit down" he took them from me "fine" I went to the couch.
It was the next morning and we were getting ready for the gym, I put leggings and one of Sean's shirts. "I'm tired" I yawned "you want to stay home?" He asked coming up behind me "no I'm fine promise" "you sure?" I turned and wrapped my arms around his neck, I nodded he leaned down and kiss me moving his hands to under my butt "we're not gonna make it the way your kissing me right now" I said pecked his lips and moved away "is that so bad?" he said and shrugged "yes, come on" I called over my shoulder. I was about to go down the stairs he lifted me up "what are you doing!?" I smiled "no more stairs for you" I giggled.
He opened the car door for me and helped me out "thank you" he grabbed my hand "how do I tell people your pregnant?" "how ever you want to" "we did it so much that I finally knocked you up?" he smiled "I would perfer something else but thats fine" "i'll figure something else out" he laughed opening the gym door. Sean was pretty excited he was just about the only one in the gym with no kids, Chris just had a kid Eric has three. "hey Mrs. Strickland!" Eric said making me smile "hi coach Nicksick!" he smiled.
They were all standing around after wresting about to end "guys I got something to say," I watched most of the guys roll they're eyes making me smile "i don't know what to say but Y/ns pregnant! with twins" he smiled, they all jumped around him then they all came over and hugged me "do you know what they are?" Chris asked "next month!" he nodded "give us two more fighters" I chuckled "two more seans? I don't know about that" he laughed.

4 Months
I had on a light purple sundress Sean had on the same thing he wore everyday "is that good?" he asked setting up the camera, I nodded "perfect," I smiled "come on I can't wait!" he smiled and sat next to me. "what do you want?" he asked "boy and girl so I don't have to give birth third time" "i'll be happy with anything!" "now you make me sound like a bitch" "no" he smiled and rubbed my back. "baby B and I have Baby A" we both made a cupcake in front of us "ready?" he whispered I nodded we both smiled and bite our cupcakes, I pulled mine back Pink we both turned our cupcakes to each other both of our cupcakes were pink "oh my god!" I laughed wrapping my arms around him. He held me tight smiling "are you happy?" I whisper in his ear "baby i'm more then happy" I pulled back and softly grabbed his chin kissing him.

"give me all the names" Sean said as we sat on the bed
"April, Scarlet, blayke, Sage, Cleo , Anastasia and Sidney"
"blake? Thats a boy so no thats my veto"
"Okay" I chuckled "what would you chose?" he asked me
"I think Cleo and Sidney are cute"
"Sage and Sidney" I smiled "perfect peach!" he pulled me into him "I thought that would take longer" I nodded "I guess we're just better than everyone else" I shrugged.
"I got you something" Sean said from the front door "whats that?" I asked from the couch, he brought a huge amazon package to me "do we have room for this?" he nodded and handed me his keys to open the box "thanks". I opened it and pulled out a pregnancy pillow "oh my god I wanted this!!" I pulled it out laying with it "thank you peach!" he kissed my head "my lips" he smiled and kissed me.

6 Months
I sat on the floor of the girls room, in a pair of shorts and sports bra. It was hot as fuck in Vegas in the summer and I was trying to put these cribs together while Sean was training "this makes no sense!" I groaned throwing the info paper. I started to try again before sighing and going to get up, which I guess I couldn't do. So I laid back and grabbed my phone, the dog joining me.
"what are you doing?" Sean slightly chuckling "I thought I could put these together but I can't and then I got stuck down here" I groaned he laughed "come here" he stood over me as I put my hands out he pulled me up "thank you" I said tired he kissed me "how are all my girls?" "Tired and hungry and upset" I put my hands on his shoulders "why are you upset?" He rubbed my lower back "because I wanted to set they're room up" I pouted as my eyes started to water he sighed "I'll make you something to eat then set the cribs up while you nap okay?" I nodded and he pulled my head to his chest rubbing my back kissing my head.
I was sitting in our bed Watching TV and he brought me a big plate of food "thank you peach!" I smiled and he nodded and kissed me "yeah! I'm gonna go do the cribs k?" "You sure you don't need help?" "Yeah I'll get it done quick" "okay" he pecked my lips before going back into the girls room.
When I woke up later I grabbed my phone and checked the time '6:48pm'. I walked into the the room he had them both set up and a was putting sheets on they're small bed "you already finished?' I yawned "yeah! they look good right?" "they look great! thank you" "i'm gonna work on the shelves tomorrow my brother is gonna come over and help me" "your already such a good daddy" I smiled and leaned up and kissed him "thanks" he lightly blushed and looked down I kissed his cheek over and over.

"you shouldn't go its to hot" Sean said putting his boots on "I like watching you do interviews though!" "I packed you a lunch if you still think you have to go" "you did?" I stood in front of him hands on my back he nodded "yeah and you need to take water" "I love you so much your so cute!" I kissed the top of his head. He opened his truck door for me helping me get in "here" he handed me a pillow and the lunch bag I smiled.
"did you want to get tea or something?" he asked "no i'm good thank you" I smiled "you sure?" I nodded and kissed his hand that he held. "Hi!" I smiled and hugged Nina "hi how are you?!" she smiled "i'm good you?" "great!". "Nina you have an extra chair for her?" Sean asked "it's fine babe I can stand" "you don't have to though" "yeah I have one" she said grabbing me one "thank you" I smiled. He brought me a water before going and sitting in front of the camera, "sean your gonna be a dad in like to months hows that?" "i'm happy yeah" he smiled and blushed lightly "what are you having?" Nina knew but for the interview "twins both girls!" "did you want a boy?" "yeah and maybe one down the road but i'm still very very grateful and happy about two girls" "are they gonna shoot?" he nodded "yes their mom does its only right" "how is Sean with you being pregnant?" she asked looking to me "10 out of 10," I smiled as she waved me over, he pulled me down on to his knee "he packs lunches and rubs my feet and puts cribs together. Hes great!" he rubbed my back "you heard it here Sean Strickland is in the kitchen" she laughed.
"are you going to the gym later?" I asked as we drove back to the house from Nina's "no," he shook his head "why whats up?" This was his favorite thing laying next to me his hand resting on my stomach hoping to feel one small kick. He lifted the white T shirt of his that I wore and kissed my belly "your already such a good daddy" I smiled and rubbed his head he smiled shutting his eyes waiting for another kick.

I was hanging and doing last minute things in the girls room when I feel water go down my legs then a sharp pain "oww," I sat in the rocking chair "Sean!" he came in from his gun room "you okay?" he asked coming over to me missing the puddle of water "my water broke can't you see?!" "i'm sorry yes I see baby...come here" he helped me up "you think we should wait?" "no go right now" "you have to pay more" "I don't care" "okay I have to change can you put the bags in the car?" he nodded.
"I don't wanna do this" I said in the bed more pain shooting through me "okay" he ran his fingers through my hair and wiping the one or two tears off my cheeks. "i'd say twenty minutes till its time to push!" the nurse smiled "okay!" I smiled as she walked out "what if I can't?!" I looked up at him "your body is made to do this Y/n you'll do great! Promise" he rubbed my forehead.
"hi" they laid one on my chest "holy shit" Sean whispered "shes so cute" I smiled "heres your other one" they laid her on the other side of my chest. They cleaned them handed one to me and one to Sean "this is Sidney" Sean said holding her in his chest "yeah?" "yeah" me and him not taking our eyes off the babies we were holding "that means I have Sage..my baby Sage hi" I kissed her head he came and sat next to me still holding Sidney "they already look like you" he said and smiled "that means they're gonna act just like you" "let's hope not" "it won't be to bad" kissed sages head "wanna switch?" I nodded.
It was later and he was holding both of them "damn" he sighed and had small tears going down his face "peach" I rubbed his tears off his face "they're beautiful" I kissed his cheek "yeah they are" Sidney started to fuss I grabbed her from him "come here babygirl", I started to feed her "I need some milk too" he smirked "sshh" I giggled "your such a good momma" I smiled "thank you".

What I'm doing with my anxious energy tonight:
When the curtains finally rise, they reveal a laboratory set up that looks like it was directly pulled from Undercity. Colored liquids bubble in vials and flasks of various shapes and sizes, electricity pulses upwards between a set V shaped wires, and a tesla coil hums nearby. A cauldron bubbles, spilling curling smoke across the stage and into the audience, filling the air with a sharp, minty scent while a tray of scalpels, syringes, and pliers rest on rolling stands next to VICTIM, tucked almost into a corner and strapped to a metal examination table.
VICTIM curses as they struggle against their bond, straining exposed muscles against the leather bands holding them tightly across their wrists, neck, abdomen, and ankles. Only the briefest thought towards decency spares them from being fully exposed as nothing more than a thin, almost translucent pair of briefs covers their nethers, showing just enough to intrigue but still leaving plenty to the imagination. They freeze at the sound of approaching heels clicking against the floor begins to echo from backstage accompanied by a haunting siren's call.
Onto the stage steps a stoutish humanoid figure wearing a wide brimmed black hat and dressed in a long, black latex labcoat that gleams beneath the stage lights. The edges of the hem ghost gracefully inches above the ground, but a high slit up one side shows flashes of thick, black latex coated thighs and thigh-high boots made of black polished leather adorned with a plethora of buckles, silver plating, and pointed studs. They observe VICTIM as they redouble their attempts to break free of their bindings, bringing a burning cigarette held in a long, thin holder up towards the beak of their ghastly white plague doctor mask.
Heaving their shoulders as if to sigh in disappointment, the plague doctor puts the cigarette out on a counter and saunters forward, each step measured and precise. Black gloved hands drift over the equipment as they approach their squirming victim. "There are no more tears to cry," they intone, voice distorted, almost mechanical, and a hand comes up, outstretched fingertips barely brushing over VICTIM's bare sternum. "I heard you beggin' for life."
"Runnin' out of medicine…" That same hand ghosts over to one of the syringes on the tray, the doctor's head tipping to the side as they hold it up for the audience to see, using their other hand to flick at the chamber filled with only the barest hints of glowing fluid. VICTIM lifts their head from the table, staring at the syringe in both fascination and horror as their chest rises and falls to the rhythm of the music. "You're worse than you've ever been."
The next After Dark may be months away, but the performance is in my brain now.

Dojima was gone the next morning. Of course he was. Last night's events replayed in Akechi's head. Mrs. Tatsumi's tears, the tension as Dojima recorded the events on a clipboard and Adachi just had to make an idiot of himself. None of the adults knew. Nanako certainly didn't know. It was cruel to put them through so much, but a necessary evil. Akechi had to keep reminding himself that as he scrubbed his dishes from breakfast with perhaps a bit too much ferocity.
For the first time in a long, long time, Kanji would not join them on the walk to school.
Perhaps sensing his distress, Yu dared to place a hand on his shoulder. "We'll get him today, all right?"
"We as in just you and the others, I presume…" Akechi had no Persona. It was the logical conclusion to make.
"Nah."
The denial seized Akechi's in a stranglehold. He stared at Yu for several seconds before responding. "You're joking."
"No joke." A resigned sort of smile formed as Yu wiped his own plate with a washcloth. "We can't stop you. Even if I said no, you'd probably go behind our backs, and… Well, wouldn't that just justify all the feelings you've been burying inside?"
It took several more seconds for Akechi to respond. He truly expected Yu would draw the line due to his lack of Persona. "...It'd feel like you were backsliding and that you had no faith in me after all."
"Exactly. Which isn't fair. Even Chie tagged along before she awakened her Persona." He turned to the table and passed Akechi a small list. "As long as you're packing some of these, you'll have the means to protect yourself."
Akechi skimmed the list carefully. Value Medicine, Goho-M, and various odds and ends, like… Tesla Coils? Dry Ice? Pinwheels… "Aren't these ordinary items from the Shiroku Store?"
"Yep. TV world sure is something, huh?" Rather than elaborate, he passed Akechi a surprisingly generous stack of yen. "Here, I'll even cover the tab."
Akechi accepted the money, leaning in close, as if this was all some sort of joke with a pending punchline. "Where did you even get all this?" He paused. "Wait, don't tell me. It's the hands, isn't it?"
"Okay, I won't tell you." Yu grabbed his school bag from one of the chairs at the table. "I know your Shadow's a lot to face, but I hope you know you don't have to do this alone. “Done. Try moving your hand.” Cogsworth said they opened their eyes, releasing Tesla’s finger from their mouth. 
“Who knew ya were a biter?” Tesla laughed as she began massaging her gauzeless thumb. Ever turned back to look at their new arm, which was made of copper piping and wiring. The hand was made of copper plating with wiring that led into the fingers and up the arms. The fingers were made up of small copper pipes, which were held together at the joints by hinges. Ever slowly closed their hand into a fist, wincing as they did so before opening it. They continued to open and close their hand before looking over at Cogsworth, “I can move it?”
“Of course, you can.” There was pride in his voice and he smiled at Ever before he continued. “Now this is just a temporary fake. I’ll make you some permanents, but that should take about a week, maybe less.” He said as he picked up another silver object, “You ready this time? I’m gonna need you to pin her leg down.” Cogsworth said looking at Tesla who held up her thumb, which was now wrapped in gauze, which she placed in front of Ever who took it between their teeth. Tesla pressed their leg against the counter and Ever grabbed Tesla’s hand just as he pressed it into the flesh of their ankle. 
They squeezed their eyes closed and bit down harder, causing Tesla to cry. “Ow, ow, ow, ow!” The pain in their ankle spiked and before slowly dissipating until it was just a low throb. Ever opened their eyes, releasing Tesla’s thumb and letting go of her hand. Ever looked down at their foot which had a similar design to their arm only that the bottom and top of the foot is made up of copper plating and the ankle being made of copper piping, wires, and springs. Ever moved the foot forward and back and to the left and right before jumping off the counter. They winced loudly as pain shot through their leg before fading back into a dull throb. 
“Try walking across the store,” Cogsworth said as he began packing up the box. Ever took a deep breath before taking a hesitant step forward with their left foot, wondering if the copper pipe and plating was stable. When the foot didn’t slip out from under them, they moved forward, taking short strides, attempting to keep from falling over themselves. The feel of the foot was awkward and uncooperative, which led to Ever having a strange limping gait. Bringing their leg around in an odd semicircle like movement with each step as they attempted to keep from moving the actual foot. “It’ll get easier to walk with time and once I’m finished with your permanents it’ll be just like your old one, just with the need for routine maintenance.” 
Ever made it to the other side of the store, leaning against the wall as Tesla spoke. “So, how much do I owe ya?” 
“Five gold coin should just about cover it.” Cogsworth said. 
There was the sound of rustling fabric and clinking metal as Tesla spoke. “Luckily for us, I got an allowance for this trip. As long as I get a receipt, that is.” 
“I can write one up for you real quick.” Cogsworth said. 
Ever listened as he walked behind the counter and began moving things around as Tesla placed a hand on their shoulder. “Need a shoulder to lean on while ya find your feet.” Ever nodded, wrapping their arm around her shoulder and leaning into her as she turned them around, moving toward the counter. 
Cogsworth handed Tesla a slip of parchment paper. “Come back in about a week for your permanents and some minor adjustments.” 
Tesla took the paper, stuffing it in her bag, smiling at Cogsworth. “Thank ya.” 
She nudged Ever in their rib, who flinched and looked up at Cogsworth. “Yeah. Thank you.” He smiled at them as Tesla helped Ever over to and out the door.
On the walk to the tailor, Ever managed to get the hang of walking on their new foot, no longer walking with an odd semicircular gate. Instead, they found it far easier to move by pushing their body up with their real foot pushing their body forward and moving their prosthetic foot forward to repeat the process. It was decidedly less awkward and hopefully less noticeable to those looking on. 
The tailor was in the shopping district, which was decidedly nicer than the residential area, with paved roads and well-kept storefronts. Most were made from stone, brick, and iron with large windows for window shopping. The pair walked through the strip of stores, Ever taking in the names on some of the signs. ‘Flora’s Floral Arrangements’, ‘Fred’s Fry’s and Burgers’, and ‘Cedars Woodworking’ were just a few. Tesla came to a stop as Ever took on the signs, causing them to bump into their back. Ever, with some difficulty, backed up and saw the scowl on Tesla’s face.
“It should be around here somewhere.” She mumbled as she looked down at a slip of paper which had an address and the name of a store. ‘Spool & Thread’ 
Ever looked over the storefronts at the signs until their eyes landed on one that looked like a spool of thread with the words formed out of thread and a needle going through the center of the spool. “Is that it?” Ever pointed at the sign and Tesla looked over at it squinting her eyes.
“Don’ know how I missed that.” She shrugged and took Ever by her left hand. “Well, no matter. Let’s go.” 
Tesla pulled Ever forward, causing them to stumble, barely managing to catch themselves. “Whoa.”

Whatever his personal flaws, Elon Musk has been a masterful business builder. Tesla and SpaceX are two of the more successful companies the South African-born entrepreneur has conceived or led. But now Musk has encountered an obstacle both tenacious and effective: Swedish trade unions. Not even the world’s some-time richest man and the world’s most valuable auto brand have been able to dislodge the unions from their long-standing place in the Swedish economy. That’s good news for every country that believes in tempering the market economy with its own national characteristics.
“This is insane,” Musk tweeted on Nov. 23, 2023. He was responding to news from Sweden: The communications workers union had announced that its members would no longer deliver letters and packages to Tesla. That meant, among other things, that number plates for Tesla cars would not be delivered. That, of course, made the cars undrivable.
The communications workers union—known as Seko—was just the latest group to launch so-called sympathy strikes against the American carmaker. The transport workers union had already stopped handling Tesla cars arriving in Swedish ports, and so had the dockworkers union. The electricians union had stopped installing and servicing Tesla charging points. The custodians union had stopped cleaning the company’s facilities. The painters union had announced it was going to stop painting Tesla cars. The construction workers union had announced it would stop work and repairs on Tesla facilities. Since then, Norwegian and Danish labor unions have stopped handling Tesla cargo bound for Sweden and suspended garbage collection at Tesla’s facilities. Since the end of October, more than a dozen unions have launched strikes against Tesla, and the strikes continue.
These workers and their unions don’t have a direct conflict with Tesla: They’ve gone on strike to support their auto-mechanic colleagues who are employed by the global auto giant, because Tesla has refused to allow the IF Metall, which represents a range of groups including factory workers, the right to collective bargaining on behalf of its autoworkers. Tesla’s autoworkers went on strike on Oct. 27 entreaties by IF Metall for collective bargaining went nowhere. (Tesla doesn’t have a Swedish manufacturing plant, but it does have facilities where the cars are serviced.)
Sympathy strikes, where unions suspend work for a company in support of another union, are a powerful but rarely used feature of the Swedish labor market. It is, in fact, a bit of a remnant from a century ago, when Swedish labor market relations were more adversarial than today. For many decades now, however, relations have been largely collaborative. It works like this: Every employer allows trade employees not just to unionize but to represent all its workers, and the unions then negotiate wages and other aspects with the employer on behalf of their worker category.
IF Metall, for example, conducts collective bargaining with Volvo on behalf of the carmaker’s autoworkers, while the custodians union—Fastighets—negotiates with Volvo on behalf of the custodians employed by the company. Under this kind of arrangement, trade unions act with moderation, because the recurring negotiations with the employers allow them to reach agreement on not just wages but also on other issues including sick pay, vacation pay, working hours, termination, and personal fulfillment. Today, Sweden has some 650 such agreements covering 90 percent of the country’s employees.
But Musk doesn’t like unions. “It’s generally not good to have an adversarial relationship between … one group at a company and another group,” he told Andrew Ross Sorkin in an interview on Nov. 29. Indeed, Musk has tried to keep Tesla de-unionized, and that seems to have served him well on American home soil: When the United Auto Workers union targeted the Big Three (GM, Ford, and Stellantis) in a massive strike last fall and emerged with pay raises as high as 89 percent, Tesla could keep turning out its cars, unperturbed by any disruption. When IF Metall tried to get Tesla in Sweden to agree to collective bargaining, the answer came back that such decisions are made by Tesla’s headquarters in the United States.
The autoworkers’ strike, and the massive wave of sympathy strikes that have hit every aspect of Tesla’s operations, followed. “When we take action against an employer that doesn’t allow collective bargaining, it’s typically a small workplace, and we get public opinion against us,” Veli-Pekka Saikkala, a former auto mechanic who leads IF Metall’s collective bargaining, told me. “But this time, people’s view is that big Tesla, which is owned by the world’s richest man, shouldn’t come to Sweden and tell us how to do things.” The issue isn’t just about Tesla’s practices; it’s about protecting Sweden’s business and union norms—and a system that most Swedes are happy with and that has produced an extraordinarily well-performing economy.
Christer Thornqvist, a lecturer in business administration at the University of Skovde who specializes in trade unions, told a Swedish publication that Sweden has seen nothing like it since sympathy strikes against Toys “R” Us in the 1990s. In those delirious early days of globalization, the American toy chain arrived, similarly thinking that it could export its labor market practices along with its goods. But Swedish workers would have none of it. The transport workers union stopped transporting goods from Toys “R” Us; the dockworkers union stopped handling its arriving cargo; Fastighets stopped cleaning its shops and facilities; and eventually the American giant relented.
“The strikes against Tesla are, of course, about Tesla’s workers in Sweden, because they deserve the same rights as other workers in Sweden,” said Laura Hartman, who was until last fall chief economist at LO, Sweden’s blue-collar trade union confederation. “But primarily this is about the Swedish model, which is built on the concept that the labor market parties reach agreements. If companies start deviating from it, this will undermine our system and legislate about many workers’ rights.” Sweden, for example, doesn’t have a minimum wage—because unions and employers jointly negotiate such matters.
Back in the ‘90s, U.S. firms rapidly expanded in a dizzying range of emerging market economies, and expanding there often meant that they could also export their way of doing business. Western European companies did the same. There were other hurdles, to be sure, but a solid collective-bargaining system wasn’t one of them. U.S. foreign policy pursued a similar strategy: Other countries were to become more like America. This wasn’t done with malice. American business leaders and policymakers simply assumed that countries opening up would naturally want to become more like the United States. In those exuberant years, it didn’t occur to most American leaders, or admittedly to leaders from other Western countries, that states might want market economies and even democracy—but done their own way.
“In Sweden, we have very few strikes, and that’s because employers and unions work closely together,” Saikkala noted. “This benefits the labor market. The situation may be different in other countries, but it’s strange to assume that a company can use the same model around the world.” Indeed, Musk seems unaware that Swedish unions are different from American ones. In December, Tesla advertised on its careers page for a person with “a proven track record of getting regulatory changes made in the Nordics” to be based in Stockholm or Oslo. The listing is no longer available, though it’s unclear if this is because the person who’s to force the Nordics to change their generations-old labor market system has been hired—or because someone realized it was a bad idea.
Either way, in the Swedish unions, the world’s some-time richest man has encountered what may be the most maddening hurdle of his career. Even though going on strike is expensive for unions and thus their members, the sympathy strikes have kept accumulating. The fate of a few dozen mechanics has turned into a battle between the softer Nordic model and the unbridled capitalist vision of people like Musk. “All of a sudden, people in Sweden and beyond are learning a lot about collective bargaining,” Hartman reflected. “In the long run, this can strengthen unions in other countries. Small trade unions have a tendency to become militant. Large trade unions like we have in Sweden tend to work more collaboratively with employers, and that model is what’s at risk if companies like Tesla refuse to allow collective bargaining.”
Indeed, Tesla has emerged looking tin-eared, and not just because of the job advert. Rather than giving a few dozen Swedish autoworkers the right to collective bargaining, the world’s by far most valuable automaker is—for example—collecting its trash in vans and using a convoluted way of getting temporary license plates. Now 16 Nordic institutional investors with combined assets of more than $1 trillion have written to Tesla headquarters asking the company to work with the Swedish unions. The Danish pension fund PensionDanmark is even selling its Tesla shares over the dispute. As Billy Bragg sang, “There is power in a union.”
